6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT) Calculator

6 Minute Walk Test Calculator

Vital Signs (Optional)

To calculate your 6 Minute Walk Test results, input your Age, Height, Weight, Gender, and Distance Walked in 6 minutes in calculator. The calculator determines your Predicted Walking Distance, actual performance as a Percentage of Predicted, and provides a Functional Assessment. Additional inputs include Pre and Post-test vital signs for comprehensive evaluation.

The 6MWT test is commonly used for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions like COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or heart disease, as well as those recovering from surgery or dealing with conditions affecting their mobility.

How to Calculate 6 Minute Walk Test?

To calculate the 6 Minute Walk Test results, measure total distance walked in 6 minutes on a flat surface. Compare this to the predicted distance based on gender-specific equations using age, height, and weight. The actual distance is divided by predicted distance to determine the percentage of predicted value, which indicates functional capacity.

Formula for 6 Minute Walk Test

Predicted Distance for Men:

Distance = (7.57 × Height) - (5.02 × Age) - (1.76 × Weight) - 309
where:
Height = Height in centimeters
Age = Age in years
Weight = Weight in kilograms

Predicted Distance for Women:

Distance = (2.11 × Height) - (2.29 × Weight) - (5.78 × Age) + 667
where:
Height = Height in centimeters
Age = Age in years
Weight = Weight in kilograms

Percentage of Predicted:

Performance = (Actual Distance ÷ Predicted Distance) × 100
where:
Actual Distance = Distance walked in meters
Predicted Distance = Calculated expected distance

Example 1: Healthy Adult Male

  • Age = 45 years
  • Height = 175 cm
  • Weight = 75 kg
  • Distance Walked = 600 meters
  • Predicted Distance = 576 meters
  • Performance = 104%

Example 2: Senior Female

  • Age = 70 years
  • Height = 160 cm
  • Weight = 65 kg
  • Distance Walked = 400 meters
  • Predicted Distance = 442 meters
  • Performance = 90%

Example 3: Young Adult Male

  • Age = 25 years
  • Height = 180 cm
  • Weight = 80 kg
  • Distance Walked = 650 meters
  • Predicted Distance = 621 meters
  • Performance = 105%

Example 4: Middle-Aged Female

  • Age = 55 years
  • Height = 165 cm
  • Weight = 70 kg
  • Distance Walked = 475 meters
  • Predicted Distance = 492 meters
  • Performance = 97%

Example 5: Elderly Male

  • Age = 80 years
  • Height = 170 cm
  • Weight = 68 kg
  • Distance Walked = 350 meters
  • Predicted Distance = 455 meters
  • Performance = 77%

What is 6 Minute Walk Test?

The 6 Minute Walk Test is a assessment of functional exercise capacity. It measures the distance a person can walk on a flat, hard surface in 6 minutes. This test evaluates the global and integrated responses of all body systems involved during exercise, including the Pulmonary, Cardiovascular, Systemic and Peripheral Circulation, Blood, Muscular, and Neuromuscular systems. It’s widely used in clinical settings to assess functional capacity in various conditions and monitor response to interventions.
