Self-Raising Flour Calculator

Self-Raising Flour Calculator

Enter your all-purpose flour amount. Select your preferred measurement unit (grams, cups, or ounces). Choose your altitude level for proper leavening adjustment. The calculator will provide the exact amounts of baking powder and salt needed.

  • Inputs: Flour = 100g, Unit = grams, Altitude = sea level
  • Process: Enter values and select measurements
  • Result: Add 4.25g baking powder and 1g salt

How to Convert All Purpose Flour to Self Rising

To convert all-purpose flour to self-raising flour, add the required amount of baking powder and salt. For standard sea-level recipes, use 4.25% baking powder and 1% salt by weight of the flour amount.

For volume measurements, add 1½ teaspoons baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt per cup of flour. Reduce baking powder amount by 20% for high-altitude baking and by 30% for very high altitude.

  • Inputs: 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Calculations: 1½ tsp baking powder, ¼ tsp salt
  • Result: Mix thoroughly and store in airtight container

All Purpose to Self-Raising Flour Formula

For every 100g flour:
Baking Powder = Flour × 0.0425 (4.25%)
Salt = Flour × 0.01 (1%)

For every 1 cup flour:
Baking Powder = 1.5 teaspoons
Salt = 0.25 teaspoons

Standard Home Baking

  • Inputs: Flour = 250g, Altitude = sea level
  • Calculations: 250g × 0.0425 = 10.6g baking powder, 250g × 0.01 = 2.5g salt
  • Result: Mix 10.6g baking powder and 2.5g salt

High Altitude Baking

  • Inputs: Flour = 2 cups, Altitude = high
  • Calculations: (2 × 1.5) × 0.8 = 2.4 tsp baking powder, 2 × 0.25 = 0.5 tsp salt
  • Result: Mix 2.4 tsp baking powder and 0.5 tsp salt

Small Batch Recipe

  • Inputs: Flour = 125g, Altitude = sea level
  • Calculations: 125g × 0.0425 = 5.3g baking powder, 125g × 0.01 = 1.25g salt
  • Result: Mix 5.3g baking powder and 1.25g salt

Large Batch Baking

  • Inputs: Flour = 500g, Altitude = sea level
  • Calculations: 500g × 0.0425 = 21.25g baking powder, 500g × 0.01 = 5g salt
  • Result: Mix 21.25g baking powder and 5g salt

Very High Altitude

  • Inputs: Flour = 300g, Altitude = very high
  • Calculations: (300g × 0.0425) × 0.7 = 8.9g baking powder, 300g × 0.01 = 3g salt
  • Result: Mix 8.9g baking powder and 3g salt

What is Self-Raising Flour?

Self-Raising Flour is a pre-mixed combination of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt in specific ratios. The standard formula adds 4.25% baking powder and 1% salt to regular flour, creating a convenient mix that automatically produces leavening (rising) in baked goods without needing additional ingredients. This flour is commonly used in quick breads, scones, and biscuits where consistent, reliable rising is desired.

1 cup flour = 1 cup all-purpose flour + 1½ tsp baking powder + ¼ tsp salt
1 kg flour = 1000g flour + 42.5g baking powder + 10g salt
