Bowl Segment Calculator

Bowl Segment Calculator

To calculate Bowl Segments, enter Bowl Diameter, Number of Segments per ring, and Ring Height. Enter Wall Thickness and Number of Rings desired. The calculator compute Segment Length, Cutting Angle, and Material Requirements for each ring. Select your preferred units (inches or millimeters) for measurements.

How to Calculate Segment of the Bowl?

To calculate bowl segments, first determine Ring Circumference based on bowl diameter. Divide the circumference by the number of segments to find individual Segment Length. The Miter Angle equals 360 degrees divided by twice the number of segments.

Each ring’s segments are cut at this angle on both ends. Calculate Ring Diameter for each layer based on the wall thickness and taper angle. Consider wood thickness and kerf loss in material calculations.

Bowl Segment Formula

Segment Length Formula:

Segment Length = (π × Ring Diameter × cos(Taper Angle)) / Number of Segments
where:
Ring Diameter = Outside diameter for each ring
Number of Segments = Segments per ring
Taper Angle = Bowl wall angle from vertical

Miter Angle Formula:

Miter Angle = 180° / Number of Segments
where:
Number of Segments = Segments per ring

Ring Diameter Calculation:

Ring Diameter = Previous Ring Diameter - (2 × Wall Thickness × tan(Taper Angle))
where:
Wall Thickness = Bowl wall thickness
Taper Angle = Bowl wall angle from vertical

Example 1: Simple Bowl Ring

  • Bowl Diameter = 10 inches
  • Number of Segments = 12
  • Ring Height = 0.75 inches
  • Segment Length = 2.618 inches
  • Miter Angle = 15 degrees

Example 2: Large Decorative Bowl

  • Bowl Diameter = 14 inches
  • Number of Segments = 16
  • Ring Height = 1 inch
  • Segment Length = 2.747 inches
  • Miter Angle = 11.25 degrees

Example 3: Small Display Bowl

  • Bowl Diameter = 6 inches
  • Number of Segments = 8
  • Ring Height = 0.5 inches
  • Segment Length = 2.356 inches
  • Miter Angle = 22.5 degrees

Example 4: Tapered Bowl

  • Bowl Diameter = 12 inches
  • Number of Segments = 10
  • Ring Height = 0.875 inches
  • Segment Length = 3.770 inches
  • Miter Angle = 18 degrees

Example 5: Complex Pattern Bowl

  • Bowl Diameter = 8 inches
  • Number of Segments = 24
  • Ring Height = 0.625 inches
  • Segment Length = 1.047 inches
  • Miter Angle = 7.5 degrees

What is Bowl Segment?

A Bowl Segment is a precisely cut piece of wood used in creating segmented bowls through woodturning. Multiple segments are joined together to form Rings, which are then stacked and glued to create the bowl’s shape. Each segment requires exact Miter Angles and Lengths to achieve tight joints and proper ring formation. The number of segments affects the design pattern and structural integrity.
