How to Calculate How Many Trees Per Acre

Measure your planting area dimensions in feet. Choose your planting pattern (square, rectangular, or triangular). Identify recommended spacing between trees and between rows for your tree species.

For square patterns, divide 43,560 (square feet per acre) by the product of row spacing and tree spacing. For triangular patterns, multiply the result by 1.15 to account for increased density. Multiply your per-acre result by your total acreage for the final tree count.

  • Row Spacing = 12 feet
  • Tree Spacing = 8 feet
    Trees per Acre = 43,560 / (12 × 8) = 453.125
    Result: You can plant approximately 453 trees per acre.

  • Row Spacing = 20 feet
  • Tree Spacing = 15 feet
    Trees per Acre = 43,560 / (20 × 15) = 145.2
    Result: You can plant approximately 145 trees per acre.

Tree Spacing Formula

Square/Rectangular Pattern:

Trees Per Acre = 43,560 ÷ (Row Spacing × Tree Spacing)

Triangular Pattern:

Trees Per Acre = (43,560 ÷ (Row Spacing × Tree Spacing)) × 1.15

Total Trees = Trees Per Acre × Total Acre
